Basic Concussion Information
A Concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a force that causes the head and brain to be quickly moved. This fast movement can cause the brain to move around in the skull, creating chemical changes to the brain and sometimes even damaging brain cells. A concussion is a functional injury making it invisible for medical imaging such as CT or MRI scans, this means that even if a scan comes back normal your child could still have sustained a concussion. Diagnosis of a concussion is based on a variety of factors including; symptoms, cognitive ability and neurological testing. A proper evaluation needs to be completed by a qualified health-care professional such as an Athletic Trainer or Sports Medicine Physician.
